Orion the hunter

There is a hunter who is known for his beauty and talent. His name is Orion, the son of Don and Kim who are known as great legends of Yamato. When Orion was a child, he learned to hunt wild beasts in order to protect his family’s herds. Because he lived in a dangerous area he learned quickly how to use a weapon known as a sword. He quickly became very strong and robust as a man. He was popular because he was very likeable around the land and people thought that he was also trustworthy. Orion was often asked to rid the land of creatures since he was the only person who was strong enough to do so. Although it would have been a scary task to the regular person, Orion was always very brave and never turned down the opportunity to help out his friends, neighbors, and countrymen which was in essence due to his boastfulness.

Since Orion was known as the greatest person alive, not everyone liked him because they were jealous of his skill, fame, and beauty.  The king of the land, Owen, in particular was not being praised enough by the people and saw that Orion was taking this away from him so he sent his daughter, May, to seduce Orion. May did not know her father’s plan and fell in love with Orion.  Orion, in turn, fell in love with May and wanted to marry her as soon as possible. Just as Owen the king had planned, Orion went to Owen and asked for May’s hand in marriage.  Owen used this opportunity to rid himself of Orion by sabotaging his relationship with Amy and making a fool of Orion in front of not only Mar, but all of the people of the land.  Owen gave him the task to kill all the beasts in the land thinking Orion would get killed.  Little did Owen know, Orion, through the love of May, fought with more might than ever and did, in fact, kill all the beasts of the land. Owen, in dismay, had to come up with a different plan to get rid of Orion, and he had to do so quickly since the marriage was now just one day away.  Owen planned a party for Orion and got him very drunk and then drugged Orion hoping that Orion would make love with one of the girls that Owen invited to the party. But instead, Orion, found his fiancé and could not wait to spend the night with her even though the marriage was the next day. Owen used the law of the courts to dismiss the marriage and as punishment, burned out Orion’s eyes with a red hot sword that had been heated in air blown coals. Though May loved Orion, her love could not break her father’s jealousy for Orion and was forbidden from seeing Orion.

Now Orion was blind and could not see. He was suffering and was very sad from losing his love and all of the people that once followed him and looked up to him looked at him with distrust, disgust, and dismay.  He did not have anywhere to go and did not know what to do so he started wandering the beaches.  Through all the troubles he had just gone through, he had forgotten that he was the son of the ocean god, Don.  He then got in the ocean and began to enjoy a swim when all of a sudden, the spirit of his father, created a current to bring him far away in a land of safety.  Don, knew there was a healer of eyes at this place but Orion did not know why his father had taken him there. When he arrived at the land of the east, he did not know where he was.  He asked the first person he came across, “Excuse me, where am I?” A womanly voice answered, “Sendai.”  He knew somehow that this voice had something in common with him and asked her name.  She said, “My name is Artemis but you can call me Amy.” Orion, as the great hunter, had heard of that name from travelers far and wide but never did get to meet her until this moment.  He finally got to meet the strongest female hunter in the world. When Orion introduced himself, Amy also knew who he was as she too heard of him in the same way.  After listening to the story about what happened with his eyes, she said “If you promise to hunt a dangerous beast with me, I will restore your sight.”  She explained that there is a beast causing troubles in the town and that the beast is too strong for even her to beat. She went on to tell him that with the power of two of the greatest hunters in the world that there would be a chance.  Orion, wanting his sight to be restored and never wanting to turn down any hunt, agreed to the deal.  As Amy said, she knew the way to restore his eye sight.  She received a magical medicine as recognition from the god of the sun for defeating a beast that had scorched the land.  According to the god, this medicine was made by the power of the sunlight and it would cure any kind of illness. So, Amy tried that medicine on Orion’s eyes and it magically restored his sight.  So, as promised, Orion and Amy went to kill the beast that lurked around the land of Murkmar, a neighbor to Sendai.  The journey of the beast hunt brought Amy and Orion closer together as they began to fall in love. The town’s people of Murkmar and Sendai respected the two for killing the beast and hailed them as the best couple hunters in the world.

As time went on, Orion learned to not be boastful of himself and became more humble.  Amy saw Orion’s change and asked him to marry her.  Orion, with memories of his long lost love from years ago, forgave her father and let her go as he happily accepted the marriage. People from all over the world came to their wedding as it was the most talked about event of the time.  In additions, the newlyweds got offers to hunt other country’s wild beasts so they used it for their life long honeymoon.  For every country that they visited and killed a wildest beast, which was seven. A fire ball was hurled into the sky to give thanks to Orion and Amy.  To this day, you can look up and see Orion and his sword, killing the beasts of the universe.

The constellation of Orion is one of the easiest constellation to find in the winter and spring sky. The easiest way to find Orion is to go outside in the evening and look in the southwest sky. The main shape of Orion is a large rectangle of four bright stars, with two of the brightest stars in the sky, Betelgeuse at upper left and Rigel at bottom right. Ancient people thought three stars of the Orion’s belt as a symbol of a legend. As I describe deeper about the figure and symbol of Orion’s belt, I am going to discuss how ancient Greece created mythology and many stories about constellation.

Mythologies about Orion are addressed in many countries in various way.  Even only in Greek myths, there are several different stories about Orion. It is very difficult to define which story was the original. According to Homer’s the Odyssey, describes Orion as a giant handsome hunter. Many stories about Orion’s birth are much of the same, he was a son of the king of sea, Poseidon. Orion was represented as a great hunter.  Through explaining about main story of Orion’s life, I also would like to compare with different tales. Because of the Orion’s belt is such outstanding, there are many interpretation and tales about it all over the world.  Especially the Chinese association of Orion is quite interesting and I will deeply discuss in next paper.

By talking about different myths about Orion and compare connections about each tales, I also would like to discuss about conflict deaths about him.  There are many deaths about Orion and they all look similar yet different. Some stories interpreted that Orion was killed by a scorpion.  Some say that the scorpion was sent by Mother Earth.   Others say it was Artemis, who sent the scorpion to kill Orion.  Many stories are associated with the constellation of scorpion and I am going to discuss deeper about it.  At the same time, as another myth, it was actually Artemis who killed Orion.  The Greek myth says that Artemis’s brother tricked Artemis to kill Orion.  I will use Graves, The Greek Mythology as a reference.

At the end, by discussing the myth differences, I am going to focus on what can we learn from all of the Orion’s myths. Through observing Orion’s personality, I believe that the myths are trying teach us many moral lessons and how people should act with talents.

Forever chased by a scorpion

There are many versions of the myth of Orion; however, not many of them show Orion as a hero or a legend.

Additionally, most of the stories end up with a pitiful death of Orion.   Many of myths end with Orion’s death caused by his insolent personality.

Many stories say that Orion got killed by a scorpion.  Some say that the scorpion was sent by Mother Earth.  Others say it was Artemis, who sent the scorpion to kill Orion.  The reason why he made one of them very mad was because Orion said that he will hunt down all the animals of the earth.

It seemed very ironic that he got poisoned by such a tiny creature after saying such a thing.

Another story says that Orion got chased by a scorpion and while he was running away from it through Ocean, accidentally killed by Artemis. These stories have been passed down through so many ages and have changed in many ways.  Out of all the stories, I think the story where Orion was killed by Artemis is the correct one because it is the oldest according to the Odyssey.  Even though he died and became a constellation, he is still pursued by a scorpion.

If you think Greek mythology as an anthropomorphic religion, the gods including Orion were imagined in the form of men.  Even with great talents like Orion’s, nobody can be perfect.

Was Orion a good guy?

Orion the hunter

When you look up at the night sky on a clear evening, you may be surprised at how many stars you will see.

The constellation `Orion the Hunter` is visible throughout the world and is one of the most popular constellations in many countries.  However, if you look at this specific tale, you will realize how much moralistic lessons it has.

The Greek Myths tells us that Orion, son of Poseidon and Euryale. He was also known as the handsomest and greatest hunter.

He served King Oenopion  as huntsman for a short time but was blinded and exiled onto the seashorse after raping the King’s daughter.  After finding a small boat and guided by the sound of a hammer, Orion had to travel east to seek the sun’s rays to recover his eye-sight.  After he succeeded to restore his sight, he set out to avenge to Oenopion but the king hid himself in an underground hideaway and therefore the revenge of Orion resulted in failure.  Orion gave up and instead, he fell in love with Artemis, the goddess who was also known as the huntress.

They loved each other very much, however, the brother of Artemis hated the arrogance of Orion and asked Mother Earth to send a scorpion to kill him.  At first, Orion tried to fight against the scorpion but it had armor that even Orion, nor any mortal`s weapon, could not defeat. Orion then decided to swim far out into the sea to get help.  While this was happening, Artemis’s brother tricked Artemis into firing an arrow at a tiny object in the sea which was Orion.  Later, the body of Orion washed up on the shore.  In grief, Artemis found Orion`s body and set Orion’s image among the stars, eternally pursued by a scorpion….

There are many versions of the myth of Orion and normally, they are all known as legendary stories.  The soever handsome and strong Orion was venerated as a hero.  That is why this tale was quite shocking for me.

Orion was born from a famous family and whom the father was a very talented man and because of it, Orion was always boastful.

At the beginning of the story as I described, Orion fell in love with King’s daughter, however, it seemed her feelings were not mutual.  Although Orion was a great hunter, he was not accepted by the daughter herself nor her father.

Orion was resented by many people throughout the entire story.  His insolent personality caused all of his tragedies.  In any given narrative, at least in those of ancient Greek stories, may be blended with historical basis` and this Orion story may tell how people should be more thoughtful and think of others.
