The Odyssey is without a doubt the original adventure story. It was written by Homer somewhere around the 8th century B.C. It is a story about how a man named Odysseus who is traveling back home from the Trojan war has many obstacles and challenges thrown at him, but is able to prevail no matter the circumstances.
What I find so interesting about this story is that it is more than just an adventure story. It has many genres intertwined throughout the whole story, such as romance, and family. Odysseus’s main goal is to get back home to his wife, but at every turn runs into a problem he must deal with.
He has a run in with Circe the witch, Calypso the nymph, and he even has a few run ins with the gods, like Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, and many other monsters or obstacles. Probably the most difficult challenge he faces is to not lose his determination to get home. Even though it never really says in the story that he just wants to give up and quit trying to get home, most people would have lost that determination after the first or second peril.
Odysseus is the embodiment of determination and perseverance and that is what makes this story so enjoyable, because people all look up to someone whether that person is fictional or not.
Greek Mythology has some of the most versatile stories in the world. There are so many interpretations of some stories and have influenced many other stories throughout time.
