Writing about Literature: Collective Stories

Course Description

This student-centered, audience-based writing course is designed to help students develop rhetorical strategies for active citizenship in the classroom and out of the classroom. This course will explore the ways that the stories we tell ourselves intersect to create our identities and our understandings of the world. We will do this by examining collective stories including mythology, history, urban legends, and folk and fairy tales. Though this is not a course on storytelling, this topic will be the lens through which we look at the different ways that writing and rhetoric gets used in stories that are told and retold in our communities. We will delve into these communal stories to gain greater insight into how we as individuals can impact and are impacted by the larger context of the world around us though storytelling.
